Laser Resurfacing or a Chemical Peel? Start With Your Downtime

Blog Home

Fall is when many Pensacola patients finally turn their attention to the sun damage, uneven tone and texture that summer left behind. Two of the most requested corrective options at Grace + Grey Med Spa are laser resurfacing and chemical peels, and the choice between them often comes down to one practical question: how much time can you spend looking pink and peeling? This guide compares the two through that lens, using the treatments our Pensacola office actually offers.

How Light and Acid Reach a Similar Goal

Both treatments remove or disrupt damaged skin so fresher skin can take its place, and both encourage your skin to build new collagen. The difference is the tool. A laser delivers controlled light energy to a set depth, either removing the surface layers or working beneath them. A chemical peel uses an exfoliating solution brushed onto the skin, left for a measured amount of time, then neutralized. That difference in tools shapes everything else, from how precisely an area can be targeted to how long recovery lasts.

Depth is the variable that ties them together. A light peel or a non-ablative laser treats the skin gently and asks little of your schedule, while an ablative laser or a stronger peel works harder on stubborn concerns and needs more healing time in return. Neither one is automatically better. The right choice is the one whose depth matches your concern, your skin type and the recovery you can realistically fit in.

The Lasers and Peels on Our Menu

Erbium YAG Laser Resurfacing

Our Erbium YAG laser resurfacing, sometimes called a laser peel, is an ablative treatment. It precisely removes the outer layers of skin to address fine lines, acne scars, sun damage, brown and red spots, and visible pores. It is the more intensive of the options here, and it comes with the most recovery.

ClearLift by Alma

ClearLift is a non-ablative fractional laser. It works in the deeper layer of the skin while leaving the surface intact, which is why it is often described as a lunchtime treatment. It is used for tightening, reducing pigmentation and brightening dull skin, typically over a series of two to three sessions.

Customized Chemical Peels

Our facials and chemical peels are customized in depth and ingredients for your skin type. They help with dullness, fine lines, pigmentation and acne-prone skin, and they can be repeated monthly as part of an ongoing skin plan.

Your Calendar Decides More Than You Think

Recovery is where these treatments differ most, so it is worth mapping against your plans before you book.

  • ClearLift: No numbing is needed and you can return to your day right away. Any itchiness, swelling or dryness typically fades within one to two days. Collagen remodeling continues for around two months after treatment.

  • Chemical peel: Expect some redness and sensitivity at first. Peeling usually starts within one to two days and can continue for up to a couple of weeks, depending on the depth of the peel. Once it finishes, brighter skin is revealed underneath.

  • Erbium YAG resurfacing: Redness and sensitivity similar to a bad sunburn are normal, along with some swelling and itching. Peeling begins within a few days and can last a few weeks. It can take several weeks for pinkness to fully fade.

Preparation matters as much as aftercare. At your consultation, mention any recent sun exposure, active breakouts, cold sore history, or retinoid and exfoliant use, since these can all affect timing. Your provider will tell you which products to pause and when, and will recommend hydrating skincare to use while you heal.

Whichever you choose, daily SPF 30 or higher is essential during healing, and picking or scratching at peeling skin should be avoided. If you have an event coming up, work backward from the date and leave plenty of margin.

Matching the Treatment to the Concern

If your main goal is softening fine lines and wrinkles, improving acne scars or refining rough texture, and you can set aside time to heal, Erbium YAG resurfacing is usually the conversation to have. If you want gradual improvement in tone and firmness with no social downtime, ClearLift may fit better. If you are newer to corrective treatments, want to brighten a dull complexion, or are working on breakouts or hyperpigmentation, a series of chemical peels is often a comfortable place to start.

Corrective treatments also tend to work best as part of a plan rather than a one-off. Peels and lasers can be paired with options like microneedling or neuromodulators, and a consistent home routine with daily sunscreen helps protect the investment you make in the treatment room.

Skin tone matters too. Ablative lasers can carry a greater risk of hyperpigmentation in darker skin tones, so your provider will weigh your skin type carefully and may steer you toward a gentler option. Many patients also combine approaches over time, such as monthly peels between laser sessions, under a plan your provider sets.

Who Treats Your Skin

Skin and laser care at Grace + Grey centers on Alexis Brown, our licensed esthetician and laser technician. She has been licensed since 2019 and added laser certification and an electrology license in 2024. She tailors each plan to the individual skin in front of her rather than a standard protocol.

The practice operates under the medical direction of Dr. Kyle Shaddix, a plastic surgeon who trained in general surgery at Mayo Clinic and completed his plastic surgery fellowship at Methodist Hospital in Houston. Meet the rest of the Grace + Grey team before your visit.

Before You Book: Recovery and Cost Questions

Which costs more, a laser or a peel?

A single chemical peel is usually the lower upfront cost, but the full price of either path depends on the treatment, the depth and the number of sessions in your plan. You will get a full estimate, including how many treatments are recommended, at your consultation.

Does laser resurfacing hurt?

For Erbium YAG resurfacing, a topical anesthetic can be applied for comfort, and you wear protective eye shields throughout. ClearLift does not require numbing.

Can I get a peel and a laser treatment in the same season?

Often, yes, as long as they are spaced properly. Your provider will set the intervals so your skin has time to recover between treatments.

How many treatments will I need?

It depends on the treatment and your goals. ClearLift is typically planned as a series of two to three sessions, peels are often repeated monthly, and the number of resurfacing treatments is set at your consultation, where you will receive a full estimate and a schedule.

Should I wait until after summer?

Many patients prefer to schedule resurfacing and deeper peels in the cooler months, when it is easier to limit sun exposure while the skin heals. Whatever the season, careful sun protection afterward is part of the treatment.

Plan Your Treatment Around the Dates That Matter

Bring your calendar to your consultation along with your skin goals. Knowing your upcoming trips, events and outdoor plans helps our team recommend a treatment and timing you can live with. Consultations are complimentary, and results differ from one patient to the next.
