What is IPL?
IPL, or Intense Pulsed Light, is a form of laser treatment that uses light energy. IPL is sometimes known as photorejuvenation because it can effectively reverse skin concerns like pigmentation, sun damage, and photoaging. It works by administering light energy at a specific wavelength to pigmented areas of the skin. The wavelengths are attracted to the pigment where they generate heat and stimulate the production of new collagen. This process also damages pigmented cells so they eventually fall off. Our team can use IPL to achieve clearer, more radiant skin as your body generates new youthful collagen.
Your Customized IPL Consultation
IPL is a great option for many skin types and tones. It’s one of the most effective options available for unwanted pigmentation like brown spots, sunspots, or moles. IPL, or the photofacial, is also an excellent option for anti-aging. With regular IPL treatments, you can stimulate the production of new collagen and reverse the effects of age-related collagen loss. You can also use IPL to get rid of the effects of sun damage that tend to accumulate at the end of summer. IPL can easily be paired with other anti-aging treatments like Botox® or RF Microneedling. During your consultation with our team, you’ll discuss your best options for laser rejuvenation.
The Treatment Process
You’ll begin by meeting with the Grace + Grey team and determining the right treatment approach for your goals. This includes how many treatments you can expect to undergo and how often. Once you’re ready, your skin will be cleansed and made ready for treatment. You’ll be given protective eye shields for your vision and the specialized handpiece will be applied to the area. IPL uses very small, fast pulses of light that can feel like a rubber band “snap” against the skin but is not painful. We can supply a topical numbing cream as needed. Once complete, your skin will be soothed and made ready for the rest of your day.
Recovery and Results
You’ll have some restrictions and aftercare steps to follow after your treatment. It’s normal to have some redness and sensitivity, similar to sunburn. It can be helpful to ice the area with a protected ice pack for 15 minutes at a time. Avoid hot environments like hot tubs or saunas since heat can exacerbate the skin. Also, avoid exercising for the first two days. It’s safe to wash your face the night after treatment as long as you use a gentle, unscented cleanser. Make sure to apply a thick, unscented moisturizer to keep the skin hydrated.
Your skin should begin to look normal within a few days of your session, depending on your treatment plan. It can take a few weeks for the pigment to respond to treatment – in the meantime, it may look darker than normal. This happens because the pigment rises to the surface of the skin before flaking off. Make sure not to pick or scrub at it.
You’ll begin to see improvement in your skin after about one week, but it can take 4-6 weeks for final results. Most patients undergo a package of 2-3 treatment sessions, but our team will ensure you know what to expect from your long-term treatment plan.
