What is the IPL Device?

IPL, or Intense Pulsed Light, is a form of laser treatment that uses light energy. IPL is sometimes known as photorejuvenation because it can effectively reverse skin conditions like pigmentation, sun damage, and photoaging. It works by administering light energy at a specific wavelength to pigmented areas of the skin. The wavelengths are attracted to the pigment where they generate heat and stimulate the production of new collagen. This process also damages pigmented cells or age spots, so they eventually fall off. Our team can use IPL treatment to achieve clearer, more radiant skin as your body generates new, youthful collagen.

Your Customized IPL Consultation

IPL in Pensacola is a great option for many skin types and tones. It’s one of the most effective options available for unwanted skin discoloration like brown spots, sunspots, or moles. IPL, or the photofacial, is also an excellent option for anti-aging. With regular IPL treatments, you can stimulate the production of new collagen and reverse the effects of age-related collagen loss for a full skin rejuvenation. You can also use IPL to get rid of the effects of sun damage that tend to accumulate at the end of summer and address uneven skin texture and skin tone. IPL can easily be paired with other anti-aging treatments like Botox® or RF Microneedling. During your consultation with our team, you’ll discuss your best options for laser rejuvenation.

The Treatment Process

You’ll begin by meeting with the Grace + Grey team and determining the right treatment approach for your goals. This includes how many treatments you can expect to undergo and how often. Once you’re ready, your skin will be cleansed and made ready for treatment. You’ll be given protective eye shields for your vision, and the specialized handpiece will be applied to the area. IPL uses very small, fast pulses of light that can feel like a rubber band “snap” against the skin but is not painful. We can supply a topical numbing cream as needed. Once complete, your skin will be soothed and made ready for the rest of your day.

Recovery and Results

You’ll have some restrictions and aftercare steps to follow after your treatment. It’s normal to have some side effects redness and sensitivity, similar to sunburn. It can be helpful to ice the area with a protected ice pack for 15 minutes at a time. Avoid hot environments like hot tubs or saunas since heat can exacerbate the skin. Also, avoid exercising and direct sun exposure for the first two days. It’s safe to wash your face the night after treatment as long as you use a gentle, unscented cleanser. Make sure to apply a thick, unscented moisturizer to keep the skin hydrated.

Your skin should begin to look normal within a few days of your session, depending on your treatment plan. It can take a few weeks for the pigment and skin imperfections to respond to treatment – in the meantime, it may look darker than normal. This happens because the pigment rises to the surface of the skin before flaking off. Make sure not to pick or scrub at it.

You’ll begin to see improvement in your skin after about one week, but it can take 4-6 weeks for final results. Most patients undergo a package of 2-3 treatment sessions, but our team will ensure you know what to expect from your long-term treatment plan.

IPL FAQs

Can I pluck after IPL?

After undergoing IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) treatment, it is generally recommended to avoid plucking hair. Plucking removes the hair from the root, potentially leaving the IPL treatment without a target if done prematurely. Allowing some regrowth before plucking can help ensure the IPL treatment can fully impact the hair follicles.

Are IPL results permanent?

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy, while effective for various skin conditions, does not generally provide permanent results. The improvement in skin tone and texture from IPL therapy can be long-lasting, but not permanent, as natural aging and new sun exposure can lead to the recurrence of skin issues. Maintenance sessions may be necessary for sustained results; effectiveness can vary based on individual skin type and condition.

Does IPL permanently remove freckles?

When the melanin in freckles absorbs the light, it creates a controlled injury that encourages the skin to heal and rejuvenate, effectively lightening the freckles over time. While many individuals see a noticeable reduction in the appearance of freckles after a series of IPL sessions, freckles can sometimes return due to factors like sun exposure and genetic predisposition. If you're considering IPL therapy to address freckles, understanding your skin type and consulting with a specialist will help tailor the treatment to your specific needs.

Does IPL improve skin texture?

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy can enhance skin texture by targeting various skin concerns such as fine lines, large pores, and uneven skin tone. The broad-spectrum light helps reduce the appearance of skin imperfections and can lead to clearer, rejuvenated skin. IPL is also effective in treating sun damage, age spots, and other pigmentation issues, contributing further to enhancing the overall texture.

How long does it take for IPL to start working?

Most people start noticing improvements in their skin within seven to ten days after an IPL treatment. Full results, especially for pigmentation or redness, typically appear after a few sessions spaced a few weeks apart.

Is IPL effective for sun damage?

IPL is highly effective at treating sun damage, including dark spots, freckles, and uneven skin tone. It targets pigments in the skin, helping to break them up and fade them over time.

What are the risks of IPL?

IPL is generally safe, but potential risks include temporary redness, swelling, mild discomfort, and in rare cases, blistering or changes in skin pigmentation. Choosing a qualified provider minimizes these risks.

What is an IPL Photofacial?

An IPL Photofacial is a non-invasive treatment that uses intense pulsed light to target pigment and vascular irregularities in the skin. It helps improve the appearance of sun damage, age spots, redness, and overall skin tone.

Does IPL make you look younger?

IPL can help rejuvenate the skin by reducing discoloration, smoothing texture, and improving clarity, all of which contribute to a more youthful appearance. It also stimulates collagen, enhancing skin firmness over time.

Does IPL shrink pores?

IPL can help reduce the appearance of enlarged pores by improving skin texture and stimulating collagen production. While it does not permanently shrink pores, it can make them appear smaller and less noticeable.

Does IPL stimulate collagen?

IPL stimulates collagen production beneath the skin's surface by delivering controlled pulses of light energy. This helps improve skin elasticity, reduce fine lines, and enhance overall texture over time.

How does IPL remove pigmentation?

IPL targets melanin in the skin with broad-spectrum light, breaking up pigmented cells so the body can naturally eliminate them. Over time, this process fades dark spots and creates a more even skin tone.

Is IPL a laser?

IPL is not a laser it uses a broad spectrum of light wavelengths, while lasers emit a single, focused wavelength. However, both are light-based treatments used for similar skin concerns.

What are the side effects of IPL treatment?

Common side effects include temporary redness, swelling, and a sensation similar to a mild sunburn. Some people may experience a slight darkening of spots before they fade, and rare side effects can include blistering or changes in skin pigmentation.

Does IPL hurt more than laser?

Generally, IPL is often described as feeling like a rubber band snap against the skin, and some individuals find the pain level minimal. Laser treatments can be more intense, depending on the type and wavelength of laser being used. The best choice depends on the individual's skin type, treatment goals, and tolerance for discomfort.
