What are Stretch Marks?

Stretch marks are visible lines on the skin, typically in areas like the stomach, hips, thighs, or arms. When they first appear, they typically look reddish, brownish, or purplish before fading to a white or pearlescent color. They may itch or have texture but are otherwise harmless – many people consider them a cosmetic concern. Stretch marks are famously hard to get rid of and there are a variety of creams and products available that promise to treat stretch marks. However, stretch marks are best treated by our professional skincare team.

What Causes Stretch Marks?

Stretch marks are the product of your skin expanding quickly. There are multiple layers to your skin, one of which is a matrix of collagen and elastin – fibrous proteins which give your skin its support. When your skin expands and causes the collagen and elastin matrix to rupture, it creates visible lines (striae). Although over time the matrix can repair itself, it can leave behind visible scarring that we associate with stretch marks.

Stretch marks are common after events where you experience rapid changes in body size. They’re common during pregnancy or puberty, but can also occur with fat or muscle gain.

What are My Treatment Options for Stretch Marks?

Treatment for stretch marks is most effective when they’re new (or before they fade to a lighter color). There are a variety of professional skincare treatments that can effectively treat stretch marks, including:

It can be difficult to determine what treatment options are best for your goals without a thorough consultation. During an appointment, our team can assess your treatment area and determine the best approach for your skin. Treatment for stretch marks typically requires a package of treatments and you’ll be given a detailed schedule so you understand what to expect.

How Can I Maintain My Results from Stretch Mark Treatment?

Unfortunately, there’s little that can be done to prevent stretch marks, especially if they occur genetically. However, one way you can prevent stretch marks from reoccurring is by preventing weight fluctuations and future pregnancies. If you do experience more stretch marks, it’s important to consult our team to treat them promptly.
