What is Kybella?

Kybella is the only injectable formula that is FDA-approved to destroy fat cells under the chin. Stubborn fat can be present on virtually any part of the body, including under the chin. This area can be especially difficult to treat with diet and exercise alone. With Kybella, you can say goodbye to submental fullness, revealing a more defined jaw and neckline.

Candidates for Kybella are those who are unhappy with stubborn fat under the chin that is causing a poor jawline and the appearance of a double chin. It is important to remember that Kybella only treats stubborn fat. If your poor chin contour is caused by excess skin and tissue, you may benefit more from a surgical procedure. Kybella is effective for mild to moderate amounts of stubborn fat. Our team will meet with you to ensure that you are a good candidate for treatment. 

The Treatment Process 

During the treatment process, Kybella will be injected into several points under the chin. The formula contains deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring substance that aids in the breakdown of fat. Kybella works by destroying the fat cells that are then naturally eliminated by the body. Once destroyed, the cells can no longer store fat. Most patients will require several spaced-out sessions for optimal results. The number of sessions you will need will depend on the severity of your stubborn fat and your goals for results. 

Recovery and Results 

There is no required downtime after Kybella, so patients can get back to their normal routine. However, you might experience some swelling, bruising, and numbness under the chin. These are normal side effects and should resolve very quickly. After your treatment session, your body will need time to break down and remove the fat cells. After several months and optimal treatment sessions, you can enjoy a more defined chin profile with less stubborn fat. Once your optimal results are reached, touch-up sessions are not required. Stubborn fat cannot return, so you can enjoy your results as long as you maintain a healthy weight.

Kybella FAQs

Are Kybella injections painful?

The actual injection is very tolerable. We use a very tiny needle to inject the product into the area of concern; however, the product itself can cause a mild burning sensation upon injection.

Can fat come back after Kybella?

Yes, it can destroy current fat cells but if new fat cells are created with weight gain, it is possible to regain volume in the area previously injected.

Can Kybella be used on other areas?

Kybella can be used in multiple areas of concern. Currently, the only area that has been FDA-approved for Kybella use is the chin; but it can be used in the jowls, bra fat, abdomen, thighs, knees, and elbows. It is important to seek an injector that understands the importance of safety with these injections.

Can Kybella get rid of jowls?

Yes, it can be used to treat jowls. Typically done over a series of treatments.

Does Kybella cause sagging skin?

Every individual is different. If you remove the fat structure from an area it can cause the skin to appear loose; this is typically worse with age. If your skin is still firm and elastic, the fat cells will contract on their own as the fatty deposits melt away.

How bad is Kybella swelling?

Swelling after Kybella injections is to be expected. The worst swelling typically occurs 1-2 days after injections but resolves within a few days. Typically speaking, the injected area will look worse before it gets better.

Is Kybella permanent?

Kybella works by destroying the fat cells in the area injected. Once those fat cells are gone, they are permanently gone. However, it is possible to gain new fat cells later and may require further treatments.

How many Kybella treatment sessions will I need?

Most people need approximately three treatments with 6 to 8 weeks between each treatment to receive the desired results.

What does the recovery process look like?

You may feel some soreness immediately after treatment around the injection site. The treatment area will likely be swollen for 1-2 weeks as well as potential redness, numbness & tingling.

How soon will I see the results of Kybella?

You will likely see the results of Kybella about four to six weeks after treatment.

Can Kybella help with jowls?

Kybella can destroy the fat cells around the jawline and under the chin which can lead to jowls.
