Get a clearer picture of your health beyond the scale. The InBody Scan at the Wellness Institute inside Grace + Grey Med Spa is a quick, non-invasive assessment that measures body composition, including body fat, muscle mass, body water, and more. Your personalized results help our team better understand your unique needs, track changes over time, and guide wellness, weight management, and body composition goals. Quick. Non-invasive. Personalized insight.
What Is an InBody Body Composition Scan?
An InBody scan is a body composition analysis that breaks your weight down into what it is actually made of. Instead of a single number on a scale, you get a detailed breakdown of fat mass, lean muscle mass, and body water, so you and your provider can see what is really changing in your body.
The scan uses bioelectrical impedance analysis, which sends a very low, safe electrical current through the body and measures how easily it passes through different tissues. Muscle holds more water and conducts the current readily; fat conducts it poorly. From those measurements, the InBody device calculates a full composition profile in under a minute, with no needles, no radiation, and no discomfort.
What the InBody Scan Measures
Your results give our team a detailed picture of your current baseline, including:
- Body fat mass and body fat percentage — how much of your weight is fat tissue
- Skeletal muscle mass — the lean muscle that drives strength and metabolism
- Segmental analysis — how muscle and fat are distributed across your arms, legs, and trunk
- Visceral fat level — fat stored around the abdominal organs, which matters for metabolic health
- Total body water — including the balance between intracellular and extracellular water
- Basal metabolic rate — an estimate of the calories your body burns at rest
- Lean body mass and dry lean mass — useful reference points for tracking change over time
An InBody scan is an assessment tool, not a diagnostic test. Your provider will interpret your results alongside your health history, goals, and any lab work as part of a complete picture.
Why Body Composition Matters More Than Weight
The scale cannot tell the difference between muscle and fat. Two people at the same weight can have very different body compositions, different metabolic rates, and different health risks. And during a weight management program, the scale can stall for weeks even while your body is actively losing fat and gaining muscle.
That is where body composition data changes the conversation. If your weight has not moved but your muscle mass is up and your fat mass is down, that is real progress the scale is hiding. If you are losing weight but also losing muscle, that is a signal to adjust your plan, whether that means protein intake, resistance training, or the medication protocol itself.
What to Expect During Your Scan
The scan itself takes about a minute. You will step onto the InBody device barefoot, hold the hand electrodes, and stand still while the analysis runs. There is no changing into a gown, no enclosed space, and nothing invasive about the process.
To get the most consistent reading, we recommend:
- Come in well hydrated, but avoid a large meal in the two hours beforehand
- Skip intense exercise immediately before your appointment
- Use the restroom before scanning
- Wear light clothing and plan to remove shoes and socks
- Try to schedule follow-up scans at a similar time of day for the cleanest comparison
Let our team know if you are pregnant or have an implanted electronic device such as a pacemaker or defibrillator, as we will recommend an alternative approach to tracking your progress.
How We Use Your Results
You will receive a printed results sheet at your visit, and your provider will walk you through what each number means for you specifically. From there, your baseline becomes the reference point for everything that follows.
For patients in a weight management program, repeat scans show whether the weight coming off is fat rather than muscle, which is one of the most important markers of a healthy result. For patients on hormone replacement therapy or peptide therapy, composition changes help confirm whether a protocol is producing the intended effect on lean mass and body fat. And for patients focused on general wellness, periodic scans provide an objective way to see whether training and nutrition changes are working.
Who Should Consider an InBody Scan?
An InBody scan is a useful starting point for nearly anyone who wants better information about their body. It is especially valuable if you are:
- Beginning a medical weight loss or weight management program
- Frustrated by a scale that will not move despite consistent effort
- Working to build or preserve muscle, including during weight loss
- Starting or adjusting hormone or peptide therapy
- Focused on metabolic health and want a read on visceral fat
- Training for a specific goal and want objective progress data
- Simply curious about your baseline before making a change
InBody Scans and the Wellness Membership
Body composition is most useful when you track it over time, which is why the InBody scan is built into our Wellness Membership. Membership includes a comprehensive wellness consultation with an InBody scan, a quarterly InBody scan, and quarterly follow-ups with our nurse practitioner, along with member pricing on peptides, weight loss medications, and skincare.
You are welcome to schedule a single scan on its own as well. Many patients start with one to establish a baseline, then decide whether ongoing tracking makes sense for their goals.

Why Choose the Wellness Institute at Grace + Grey Med Spa
A body composition report is only as valuable as the guidance that comes with it. At the Wellness Institute, your scan is never handed over as a printout to figure out on your own. Our nurse practitioner reviews your results with you in context, connects them to your labs and health history, and translates them into specific next steps.
That integrated approach is the point. Body composition data, lab work, medical oversight, and a treatment plan that gets adjusted as your numbers change, all in one place, from a team that knows your history.

InBody Scan FAQs
How long does an InBody scan take?
The scan itself takes roughly 60 seconds. Plan for a slightly longer visit so your provider can review the results with you and answer questions.
Does the InBody scan hurt?
No. The scan is completely non-invasive. You stand on the device and hold the hand electrodes while a very low electrical current passes through the body. Most patients do not feel anything at all.
How often should I get scanned?
It depends on your goals. Patients actively working on weight or body composition often scan every four to twelve weeks, which is enough time for meaningful change to show up. Wellness Membership includes a quarterly scan, which suits most patients well.
Do I need to fast before an InBody scan?
Fasting is not required. We do recommend avoiding a large meal within about two hours of your appointment, staying hydrated, and skipping intense exercise beforehand, since all three can shift your reading.
Is an InBody scan the same as a DEXA scan?
They are different technologies. A DEXA scan uses low-dose X-ray, while InBody uses bioelectrical impedance. InBody is faster, involves no radiation, and is well suited to frequent repeat testing to track trends over time.
Can anyone get an InBody scan?
Most people can. We do recommend an alternative approach if you are pregnant or have an implanted electronic device such as a pacemaker or defibrillator. Let our team know in advance and we will plan accordingly.
