Juvederm or Restylane? How Our Injectors Match the Filler to the Area

Blog Home

Patients often arrive at Grace + Grey Med Spa in Pensacola, FL with a brand already in mind, usually because a friend loved her lips or an ad caught their eye. The honest answer to the Juvederm vs Restylane question is that neither family wins outright. Each one is a collection of hyaluronic acid gels, and the gel chosen for your lips may be very different from the one chosen for your cheeks, even within the same brand. What matters is how a specific product behaves in a specific part of your face.

This guide walks through how the two families differ, where each tends to fit, and what to ask at your consultation so you can have a useful conversation with your injector.

Two Filler Families, Both Built on Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid is a sugar molecule your skin already makes to hold moisture. Filler manufacturers cross-link it into a gel that sits under the skin, restores volume, and is gradually absorbed by the body over time. Because the material is the same, the real differences come from how each company builds its gels.

Juvederm is made by Allergan Aesthetics. Its newer products, including Voluma, Volbella and Vollure, use a process called VYCROSS, while Juvederm Ultra XC and Ultra Plus use an earlier process called HYLACROSS. Juvederm gels are generally described as smooth and cohesive, which is why several of them are used where a soft, even feel matters.

Restylane is made by Galderma. Restylane Lyft uses NASHA technology, a firmer gel suited to lifting, while Restylane Defyne and Refyne use a newer process designed to flex with facial movement. That range is the key point: Restylane is not simply the firmer brand, and Juvederm is not simply the softer one. Each family has products at both ends.

Juvederm vs Restylane, Area by Area

Your injector selects by area and goal rather than by logo, then considers how much movement the area sees, how thick the skin is, and how much lift or softness the result needs. These are the products Grace + Grey offers and where each is typically placed.

Lips and the Lines Around the Mouth

Juvederm Volbella is FDA-approved for lip augmentation and for softening the fine vertical lines around the mouth in adults over 21. Its lightweight gel adds subtle shape without heaviness. Juvederm Ultra XC is another lip option that adds more noticeable volume and definition to the lip border. If you are exploring lip volume and definition, these are usually the first two products discussed.

Cheeks and Midface

When volume loss flattens the cheeks, the goal is lift and structure. Juvederm Voluma is formulated for the cheeks and midface, and Restylane Lyft is used for cheek volume and midface contour. Lyft can also restore volume to the backs of the hands. Both are placed deep, close to the bone, where support matters more than softness.

Smile Lines and Marionette Lines

The folds running from nose to mouth and from mouth to chin move every time you talk or smile. Restylane Defyne and Restylane Refyne were designed for these mobile areas, with Defyne used for deeper folds and Refyne for softer laugh lines. On the Juvederm side, Vollure and Ultra Plus are used for moderate to deeper lines and folds.

Feel, Downtime and Maintenance

For most patients, the day-to-day experience of the two brands is very similar. Each treatment starts with a topical numbing cream, and many of these products also contain lidocaine for comfort during injection. A typical appointment takes 15 to 30 minutes.

Afterward, some bruising and swelling at the injection sites is common, and it usually settles within the day. Most patients go straight back to their normal schedule, and an ice pack is usually enough for any tenderness. Results are visible right away and settle in over the following weeks as swelling resolves.

How long a filler stays visible depends on the product, the area, how much is used, and your own metabolism. Lips in constant motion tend to need maintenance sooner than deeper cheek placements. Your injector will give you a realistic touch-up timeline for your specific plan rather than a single number that applies to everyone.

Why One Face Often Gets Both

Because each brand has strengths in different areas, a single visit may combine them. A patient might receive Volbella for subtle lip shape and Restylane Lyft for cheek support, with each product chosen for the job it does best. Brand loyalty can be useful when you have had a good experience with a product, but it should not override what your anatomy needs.

This is also where a broader plan comes in. Facial balancing looks at proportion across the whole face, so filler in one area is planned alongside the others instead of in isolation.

Who Plans and Places Your Filler

Filler at Grace + Grey is performed by our aesthetic injectors, Lexie Brunson, a nurse practitioner, and Kierstin Maddocks, a registered nurse whose background includes medical aesthetics and plastic surgery. Both approach treatment with an eye for natural, refined results that keep you looking like yourself.

The med spa’s medical director is Dr. Kyle Shaddix, who completed his general surgery training at Mayo Clinic, where he became Chief Resident, followed by a plastic surgery fellowship at Methodist Hospital in Houston. You can read the full team bios before you book.

Questions Patients Bring to a Filler Consult

Does one brand cost more than the other?

Price depends on the specific product and how many syringes your plan needs, not on the brand name alone. Your injector will walk you through pricing for your treatment plan at your consultation, and Grace + Grey memberships offer member pricing on many treatments.

I have had Juvederm before. Can I switch to Restylane?

Yes. Many patients move between brands over the years. Tell your injector what you had, where, and roughly when, so they can account for any product that is still present before adding more.

Which is better for under-eye hollows?

The under-eye area is delicate and not every patient is a good candidate for filler there. Your injector will assess the area in person and talk through whether filler or another approach makes more sense for you.

Is filler reversible?

Hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase if a correction is needed. This is one reason hyaluronic acid gels are such a common choice for first-time filler patients.

How far ahead of an event should I book?

Because bruising and swelling are possible, it is wise to schedule filler a couple of weeks before a wedding, trip or photo shoot. That leaves time for everything to settle and for a follow-up visit if a small adjustment is needed. Let your injector know about any medications or supplements you take, since some can make bruising more likely.

Bring Your Photos and Your Questions

The most productive consultations start with a clear picture of what you want to change. Bring a few photos of yourself from the past or examples of the look you like, and come ready to talk about any filler you have had before. Consultations at Grace + Grey are complimentary, and individual results vary from patient to patient.

Send the team a message to request a time, or call our Pensacola office on Garden Street to book your filler consultation.
